SAG Awards 2016

Sorry this is a pretty late post but I can’t miss out on covering the SAG Awards! There were some pretty surprising winners that may or may not carry onto the upcoming Oscars. Also, the great diversity in the winners and nominees was fantastic, just saying!

Full list of winners here

The highlights:

  • Outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture: Spotlight, called that and I’m leaning towards it for my pick for Best Picture
  • Outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant; YES! Did anyone else see that epic Leo and Kate hug?? GIF below!
  • Outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role: Brie Larson, Room; yup
  • Outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role: Idris Elba, Beasts of No Nation; Yes I love Idris! Why was he not nominated for an Oscar?
  • Outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role: Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl; Interesting, I did not see that coming. This category is really down to anyone for the Oscar.
  • Outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series: Downton Abbey; wow second year in a row!
  • Outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series: Orange is the New Black; another win second year in a row!
  • Outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series: Kevin Spacey, House of Cards; Again, another win second year in a row!
  • Outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series: Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder; Wait what is this, another win second year in a row?! Many repeated winners!
  • Outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series: Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent; okay back to some new winners.
  • Outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series: Uzo Aduba, Orange is the New Black; Sike! We have another win two years in a row.

Just for fun and my own personal pleasure, here is Leo and Kate hugging after Leo won his SAG.

Now onto the RED CARPET!

My favorites:

  • Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab

  • Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton

  • Saoirse Ronan in Michael Kors; I’ve been loving her looks all award season!

  • Ellie Kemper in Peter Pilotto; I normally don’t go for prints, but I really liked this dress for some reason!

Not So Good

  • Brie Larson in Versace; I love Brie but not this dress.

  • Kate Mara in Valentino

  • January Jones in Schiaparelli; It just looks a little too gauzy and not put together.

Okay, that’s it for now! Our next award show will be the Oscars, but first I will put out my Oscar Predictions soon!

Hellooooo!!!!! It is finally my favorite time of the year: AWARD SEASON! To start us off was yesterday’s Golden Globes, hosted by Ricky Gervais. Ricky…well..uh…let’s see…he was Ricky to say the least. I honestly do not understand why the HFPA asked him to come back for the fourth time to host the Globes because he was not necessarily that funny and was more cringe worthy if anything. That aside, the Globes yesterday were fantastic because of all the amazing winners!

Make sure to check out TSL’s live twitter feed from yesterday’s show for more of my reactions and opinions about the show!
Some highlights:

  • Best Motion Picture DramaThe Revenant YES! I am so excited to see this movie, well deserved!
  • Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical: The Martian, I agree with the director Ridley Scott’s comment, was this really a comedy though?
  • Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama: Brie Larson for Room. Yup, predicted that but I honestly didn’t realize how young she was until I heard her voice in her speech.
  • Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama: Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, YES YES YES YES YES! For those who know me, Leo is my all time favorite actor so this was a big moment for me.
  • Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical: Matt Damon for The Martian, yup predicted that
  • Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical: Jennifer Lawrence for Joy, yup predicted that, but the girl just has so many awards already.
  • Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture: Sylvester Stallone for Creed, I honestly did not see that coming but it was so deserved! The standing ovation and Sly’s great speech were among the best moments of the night. Shoutout to Asha A and her favorite win!
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture: Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs, the Globes just love Kate so I predicted right! (Also Leo and Kate both won last night guys, eek!)
  • Best TV Series Drama: Mr. Robot, did not see that coming!!
  • Best TV Series Comedy: Mozart in the Jungle, did not see that coming either!
  • Best Actor in a TV Series Drama: Jon Hamm for Mad Men, yup predicted that.
  • Best Actress in a TV Series Drama: Taraji P. Henson for Empire, I thought it was going to be Viola Davis but I love Taraji and Cookie so much!! Her speech was simply so Cookie and perfect!
  • Best Actor in a TV Series Comedy: Gael G. Bernal for Mozart in the Jungle, did not see that coming..going to have to look more into this show!
  • Best Actress in a TV Series Comedy: Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, did not see that coming either! Wow these CW actresses (Bloom this year, Gina Rodriguez last year) are really sweeping these Globes.
  • Best Actor, Limited Series or Motion Picture for TV: Oscar Isaac for Show Me a Hero, yup predicted that because I just love Oscar Isaac!
  • Best Actress, Limited Series or Motion Picture for TV: Lady Gaga for American Horror Story: Hotel, uhh no did not see that coming and I don’t think anyone else did either because that room was just awkward when she won…Also Leo was not throwing shade at Gaga people, she just bumped into him accidentally and he was reacting to that! Chill!

Okay so I do not really feel like typing out the rest so check out the full list of winners here.

On to my other favorite part of award season: THE RED CARPET!

This time around we have a very special guest Amanda A joining us with her Red Carpet picks as well so let’s see if any of ours overlap!

Amy’s Choices

Brie Larson in Calvin Klein

My favorite! I love the cut of the dress and the shine, she looks like a Golden Globe.

Saoirse Ronan in Yves Saint Laurent Couture by Hedi Slimane

Simple and elegant, like a Greek Goddess.

Amy Adams in Atelier Versace

Love that color on her, matches her hair!

Taraji P. Henson in Stella McCartney

Another white dress that I loved, mainly because of the fierce lady rocking it!

Kate Hudson in Michael Kors

Okay I’m sorry, I know not everyone loved this look but I surprisingly like it for some reason. It just seems like something Kate Hudson would wear and you know, if I had a bod like hers, I would show it off too!

Lady Gaga in Versace

Very classy! Even though I am still a bit surprised by her win, I do appreciate how much her style has evolved.

Laverne Cox in Elizabeth Kennedy

More white! I love the flow of this dress though.

Katy Perry in Prada

The dress is horrid, the color is horrid, her hair is horrid. No honey, just no.

Rooney Mara in Alexander McQueen

This dress is horrid, the color is horrid, her hair is horrid. No honey, just no.

Amanda’s Choices

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior

Unique silhouette and a great color on her.

Julianne Moore in Tom Ford

Beautiful color on her and a great neckline. She looks like the night sky.

Jennifer Lopez in Giambattista Valli

Got to give it up for J.Lo. She looks classy for once. Her dress is a great color and the shape is unique and interesting.

Amy Adams in Atelier Versace

Simple yet sparkly…my favorite. Actually reminds me of my prom dress which was the same color as my hair too.

Laverne Cox in Elizabeth Kennedy

Love Laverne and love the way this dress flows on her. So chic!

Lady Gaga in Versace

That look is so classy! How dare Leo laugh at her for winning an award! She still looks kinda scary though.

Melissa McCarthy in a dress of her own design

Props to her for designing her own dress. It’s flattering and I like its shine. It kinda looks like a trash bag though.

Katy Perry in Prada

Looks like a nightgown and her hair is too retro.

Kate Hudson in Michael Kors

What was she thinking? She is at the Golden Globes not the club!

Eva Longoria in Georges Hobeika

This dress looks like a tablecloth or a sofa covering. Sorry I just thought it wasn’t glam enough.

Ok so that’s the end of our Golden Globes coverage! Special thanks to Amanda A for her red carpet picks and to Asha A for watching the show with me! We’ll be back for the SAG awards Saturday, January 30th.

Oscars 2014!!!

Yes sadly award season is over :(, but now we can relive the biggest night in Hollywood: THE OSCARS! I thought the show overall was pretty good. Ellen was a great host and though the opening monologue was a bit lackluster, she kept the ball rolling with the infamous selfie, the pizza delivery, etc. If you want to hear more of my thoughts about the show, performances, and winners, check out my Post Oscars podcast with Aimee J :

full list of winners and nominees:

THE WINNERS (check mark ✓  and x mark ✗for my predictions being right or not)

    •  Best picture: 12 Years a Slave ✓
    • Director: Alfonso Cuaron – Gravity ✓
    • Actor in a leading role: Matthew McConaughey – Dallas Buyers Club ✓  Yes I wanted Leo so badly, but McConaughey did work hard for his role and his acceptance speech was pretty awesome.
    • Actress in a leading role: Cate Blanchett – Blue Jasmine
    • Actor in a supporting role: Jared Leto – Dallas Buyers Club
    • Actress in a supporting role: Lupita Nyong’o – 12 Years a Slave ✓  My favorite moment of the night was when she won! Loved her speech and she deserved the win!
    • Writing (adapted screenplay)12 Years A Slave – John Ridley
    • Writing (original screenplay) : Her – Spike Jonze
    • Animated feature filmFrozen
    • Foreign language filmThe Great Beauty – Italy
    • Music (original song): “Let it Go” – Frozen – Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez
    • Music (original score)Gravity – Steven Price
    • CinematographyGravity
    • Costume designThe Great Gatsby ✗
    • Documentary (feature): 20 Feet From Stardom ✗
    • Film editing:  Gravity Cuaron got this award first, can’t believe this was his first Oscar!
    • Makeup and hairstyling: Dallas Buyers Club

    • Visual effects: Gravity
    • Sound mixing: Gravity ✗
    • Sound editing:  Gravity ✗
    • Short film (live action): Helium ✗

So I got 16/24 = 66% I mainly got stuck in some of the documentary and technical categories. Wow Gravity swept those up with a total of 7 wins. Sadly American Hustle got shut out of all 10 of its nominations. Overall I’m happy with all the winners

Now onto the RED CARPET!

My Favorites:

  • Lupita N’yongo in Prada. I understand how the cut can be viewed as unflattering for her, but I think overall she looked beautiful.

  • Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen. great color, draping, and hair

  • Amy Adams in Gucci. Another Navy blue, but the fit is perfect and looks exquisite. The earrings are also a nice touch.
  • Camila Alves in Gabriela Cadena

Not So Good:

  • Elsa Pataky in Elie Saab. No you don’t wear that kind of dress when you are pregnant! Something flowy is the best option (see Olivia Wilde and Kerry Washington)

  • Sally Hawkins in Valentino. Pretty but not age-appropriate

  • Margot Robbie in Gucci. Okay so while it’s not thaaat bad, she looks unrecognizable as a brunette! I know she had to do it for a role, but the hair is too harsh on her and the dress is not fitted well. She was one of favs at the Golden Globes too!

I guess this is where we part for award season. 😦  Though I am sad it is all over, it was fun so…. until next year!!!
