Oscar Predictions 2019!

Happy Oscar Sunday! I have to say, it’s been a long road this year. There’s been a routine of the Academy making a ridiculous new decision, facing backlash, and then retracting their move. It has all led up to today so here’s hoping for an enjoyable show with solid winners! My predictions for tonight are below so let’s see how many I can get right this year!

OSCARS 2018!!!!

This is almost two weeks late, but I don’t care! The Oscars have come and gone, but that does not stop me from celebrating and reliving one of the best nights of the year.

So without further ado, welcome to Ticket Stub Love’s Oscar Mega Post for 2018! For new readers, in our mega post we will be discussing the show, the winners, seeing how my predictions lined up, and of course the red carpet. As usual, joining us for red carpet coverage will be Amanda A. so a special thank you to her again.

This year’s Academy Awards were special for the 90th show. Jimmy Kimmel hosted again, and I can say with full force that I am just not a fan of his hosting. I was not crazy about him last year and for some godforsaken reason, the Academy invited him back to host. After Envelopegate (check out my post from last year for a summary), the Academy was obviously trying to right their wrongs, from redesigned envelopes to even inviting Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty to present Best Picture again.

Kimmel does not strike the right chord with me though. He played it safe this time and was able to deftly discuss the Me Too movement, but overall his hosting lagged. The visiting theater bit was unnecessary (how many times will we bring in the “commoners” and laugh) and he can never handle a Best Picture moment without it being awkward (like not allowing the winners to fully speak). The show itself, on the other hand, was great. The stages were gorgeous and I appreciated the well placed montages here and there to honor film history. What’s not a great show without deserving and history making winners too!

So I wanted Shape to win this whole time, but I was scared off by Three Billboards‘ streak and the many predictions for a Get Out win. I should have went with my gut though, and I am thrilled by this win!

Greta Gerwig in Rodarte

As the fifth woman to ever be nominated for Best Director, Greta killed it this year with her film Lady Bird and she killed it in this dress! I absolutely love this yellow!

Lupita Nyong’o in custom Atelier Versace

I love everything about dress, from the gold to the details. It gives me serious Wakanda vibes and I’m here for it!

Jennifer Garner in Atelier Versace

JEN! That cobalt blue! The side swept hair! The cut and flow of that dress! This is glamour and this is a look.

Allison Janney in Reem Acra

Now this is a dress you win an Oscar in! I love the color and the flow of the sleeves.

Not my favorite dress, but I like it the more I look at it. Gotta love Sandy.

Lupita Nyong’o in custom Atelier Versace

Lupita managed to look like a more perfect version of the Oscars statue. I love the gold and the sash detail which invoked the Black Panther. Wakanda forever!

Sandra Bullock in Louis Vuitton

She is looking radiant in this metallic dress

Adam Rippon in Moschino

Loved how Adam showed off his personality in this well cut suit. Also he has fierce face down!

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Viola Davis in Michael Kors Collection

Shout out to Viola for daring to wear such a bold color among all the neutral dresses. Hot pink looks great on her! Unfortunately the neckline is kind of awkward and doesn’t flatter her.

WORST

Salma Hayek in custom Gucci

I love bling but this looks cheap and is a bit of an overload.

Saoirse Ronan in Calvin Klein By Appointment

It looks a bit like a prom dress. That pale pink does nothing for her and the fit is weird.

Happy Oscar Sunday! Before the best night of the year begins, here are my prediction’s for tonight’s winners

Best Picture: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri ? (Possibly Get Out?)

The reason I have so many question marks is because this is one of the closest races for Best Picture that I have seen in years! There really is no clear front runner. While I would love to see The Shape of Water win big, it might be the safe choice. Three Billboards has had a good run this awards season, but Get Out might be the dark horse here. When I first saw Get Out in numerous predictions, I was baffled. The preferential ballot system would favor a Get Out win though, so the logic makes sense and honestly the film is well deserving.

OSCARS 2017!!!!!!

Welcome to Ticket Stub Love’s official Oscar mega post! Award season may be over but in this post we’re gonna cover everything about Sunday night’s ceremony: from the winners, to the red carpet, to even the biggest Oscar mix up of all time. So without further ado, I give you the 89th Academy Awards!

Jimmy Kimmel was our host last night and I gotta say, I was less than impressed. Sure he had a few funny bits with Matt Damon such as his “inspirational” segment about Damon’s 2011 film We Bought a Zoo to even playing Damon off the stage when he came to present a few moments later but even those got old. Kimmel often opted to repeat the same jokes about no one watching the nominated films as well as rudely making fun of a few minority names. Kimmel tried hard at Oscar comedy gold with a bit that had unsuspecting tourists brought into the Dolby Theater but even that went on too long and was saved by a hilarious man named Gary from Chicago. Overall Kimmel was a bust as a host and not one I am likely to remember in future Oscars.

• Best picture: Moonlight ✗  We’ll get more into the Best Picture mix up later on in the post!
• Director: Damien Chazelle- La La Land ✓  
• Actor in a leading role: Casey Affleck- Manchester by the Sea ✓  This one really could have gone 50/50 to Denzel Washington for Fences. Not a huge fan of Casey and personally I was rooting for Denzel but if Casey’s performance was better, ok then.
• Actress in a leading role: Emma Stone- La La Land ✓  I’ve said it before but I do not think Emma Stone’s performance was Oscar worthy. However I really like her in general so I’m still happy for her.
• Actor in a supporting role: Mahershala Ali- Moonlight ✓  Great speech, great performance, great man. Also the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar!
• Actress in a supporting role: Viola Davis- Fences ✓  So well deserving and another great speech.
• Writing (adapted screenplay): Manchester by the Sea ✓
  
• Writing (original screenplay) : Moonlight ✓
• Animated feature film: Zootopia ✓  YES!
• Animated Short: Piper ✓
• Foreign language film: The Salesman ✓  Very important to note that The Salesman‘s director Asghar Farhadi chose not to attend the ceremony after being previously affected by the Muslim ban.
• Music (original song): “City of Stars” – La La Land ✓  
• Music (original score): La La Land ✓  
• Cinematography: La La Land ✓  
• Costume design: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ✗  So I was rooting for Jackie in this category and really hoping La La Land would not win since the only “costumes” were Emma Stone’s pretty dresses. Didn’t expect Fantastic Beasts but I can attest that the costumes are great in the film thus well deserved.
• Documentary (feature): OJ: Made in America ✓ 
• Film editing: Hacksaw Ridge ✗  This one was a tough category! I was expecting La La Land but very happy Hacksaw Ridge got some recognition! Arrival could have won in this one as well.
• Makeup and hairstyling: Suicide Squad ✗  The fact that Suicide Squad is an Oscar winning film still blows my mind.
• Production design: La La Land ✓  
• Visual effects: Jungle Book ✓  
• Sound mixing: Hacksaw Ridge ✗  Probably shouldn’t have bet so much on La La Land but again, so happy for Hacksaw.
• Sound editing: Arrival ✗  YES! Arrival actually won something!
• Short film (live action): Sing ✗  
• Best Documentary Short: The White Helmets ✓  

In the end, La La Land did not sweep as much as I expected it to (won 6 Oscars though). I’m actually so happy about that because I feel other deserving films were recognized as well. Overall I got a 17/24 for my predictions. Not the best but I’ll take it!

Now before we move onto Red Carpet, we have to talk about the Best Picture mix up! Wow. What a moment. So for those of you who did not hear about the biggest surprise of the night, here is what happened. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway came on stage to present the final award for Best Picture. As Beatty opened the envelope, there was clear confusion on his face as later on it was revealed that he was given the envelope for Best Actress instead, which read Emma Stone for La La Land. After pausing, Beatty showed the envelope to Dunaway who immediately announced La La Land as the winner after a quick glance at the envelope.

It’s interesting to note that before their mics were cut off, Beatty can be heard saying “..but it said Emma Stone” and Dunaway replying “What?” as the cameras show the La La Land crew celebrating and making their way onto the stage. Two of the producers for La La Land had already given their acceptance speeches when something was revealed to clearly amiss on stage. A show producer hurriedly came and checked the envelope as those on stage began to realize the mistake. Jordan Horowitz then went to the mic and revealed that there had been a mistake and that Moonlight had actually won Best Picture. The shocked Moonlight cast and crew went up on stage to accept their award after Beatty explained the mishap.

Emma Stone claimed she had her Best Actress envelope with her the whole time and PwC, the accounting firm that calculates the votes for the awards, admitted their mistake. There are two sets of envelopes and somehow the wrong one found its way into Warren Beatty’s hands. Beatty is not at fault here at all. It’s terrible for both films as well. La La Land had a victory cut short and had to give their awards away while the groundbreaking Moonlight did not receive the moment it deserved. Kudos to Horowitz for handling such a sticky situation with class. While I am sad for La La Land, Moonlight also very much deserved Best Picture so congrats are in order for both.

That’s an Oscar moment that will go down in history for sure. I think it’s finally time to move onto the other best part of the Oscars: THE RED CARPET!

What was going on in her head as she convinced herself that this was the dress to wear? Is she trying to be an actual Golden Girl?

Lots of gold on the red carpet! This dress actually isn’t terrible (except for the neckline) but something is off with the look as a whole.

OSCARS 2016!!!!

This is little late but whatever, any time is Oscar time! What did everyone think of this past Sunday’s Oscar ceremony? I personally was not a huge fan of Chris Rock’s hosting. He was funny but all of his jokes were about the Oscars So White issue, which is definitely important to highlight upon but it got old after a while (What even was that Stacey Dash bit?). I did like the Girl Scout cookie bit and seeing what types of cookies people got. Also, Louis C.K. should host next year because his little introduction was much funnier than all of Chris Rock’s attempts. Aside from the show, the best part about this year’s Oscars was by far the winners. Let’s go over them!

THE WINNERS (check mark ✓  and x mark ✗for my predictions being right or not)

• Best picture: Spotlight ✗ I was actually very surprised Spotlight won since it really hasn’t won many awards this season. I was rooting for The Revenant.
• Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu – The Revenant ✓  Yes! I love him and his work for this film.  It’s also his second Best Director win in a row!
• Actor in a leading role: Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant. YES YES YES ONE OF THE BEST MOMENTS OF MY LIFE

Just for your own personal pleasure, here was my reaction to Leo winning:

He is my favorite actor and he deserves this award so much. Being able to see him win that Oscar was amazing. His win also surpassed Ellen’s 2014 seflie as the most tweeted about Oscar moment!

• Actress in a leading role: Brie Larson- Room ✓
• Actor in a supporting role: Mark Rylance- Bridge of Spies ✗ This was probably the biggest upset of the night for me. I was rooting for Stallone so hard and if not Sly then definitely Mark Ruffalo. I actually thought they said Ruffalo at first with the whole Mark R-, but sadly no.
• Actress in a supporting role: Alicia Vikander- The Danish Girl ✗ I had a strong feeling Alicia would win, but I still hoped for Kate Winslet anyway.
• Writing (adapted screenplay): The Big Short ✓
  
• Writing (original screenplay) : Spotlight ✓
• Animated feature film: Inside Out ✓
• Animated Short: Bear Story ✗
• Foreign language film: Son of Saul ✗
• Music (original song): “Writing’s On The Wall” – Spectre ✓  Lady Gaga’s performance of “Till It Happens To You” was one of the best moments of the night and her song is absolutely beautiful, but I still predicted Sam Smith would win. Bond songs have a tendency to do so.
• Music (original score): Ennio Moriccone- The Hateful Eight  ✗
• Cinematography: Emmanuel Lubezki- The Revenant✓  So well deserved, the cinematography was one of the best aspects of the film. It’s also Chivo’s third consecutive Oscar!
• Costume design: Mad Max: Fury Road ✗ Mad Max dominated the Oscars this year (6 wins overall)!
• Documentary (feature): Amy ✓ 
• Film editing: Mad Max: Fury Road ✗
• Makeup and hairstyling: Mad Max: Fury Road ✓ 
• Production design: Mad Max: Fury Road ✓ 
• Visual effects: Ex Machina ✗ Actually happy Mad Max didn’t win this one.

In the end, I got a 15/24, 63%…yikes! My predictions were not on point this year. I am happy with most of the winners though!

Okay so I have very mixed feelings about this dress. On one hand, I absolutely love the yellow (my favorite color) and how it channels Belle (my favorite Disney princess), but something about the bottom of the dress throws me off.

Kate is beautiful, but this was one of the worst dresses of the night. It looks like a garbage bag.

Oscar Predictions 2016

Happy Oscar Day everyone! To start off this glorious day right, here are my prediction’s for tonight’s winners

Best Picture: The Revenant. A lot of people are saying The Big Short or even Spotlight could steal the award, but I’m betting on my favorite film of the year instead.

Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu for The Revenant

Actor in  Leading Role: Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, hands down

Actress in a Leading Role: Brie Larson for Room

Actor in a Supporting Role: Sylvester Stallone for Creed. Mark Ruffalo is also a strong contender here for Spotlight, but I love Sly so let’s hope for him!

Actress in a Supporting Role: Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs. I have a feeling Alicia Vikander could definitely win for The Danish Girl but Kate is my home girl and I would love to see her win again.
